| Changing a job isn’t always an easy thing to do. It can be quite stressful especially as the current job market is quite competitive. Job security is an important issue when deciding what position to apply for and often it is very difficult to access just by reading a newspaper advertisement that gives details of the position. As professional agents with an established portfolio of clients, some of which include internationally renowned firms such as DLA Piper, Freshfields, Shearman & Sterling and White & Case, we pride ourselves on our ability to provide candidates with employment opportunities that are not only offer the requisite job security but further positions that allow candidates to specialise in the fields they most want to with prospects of upward progress. We have tried to answer some of the most frequent questions asked by candidates when considering a job change, and hope that these may help you in your decision. Q. When is it a good time to change jobs? A. As such there is no schedule by which one should terminate or exit their current employment. Having worked in several different positions is not necessarily an indication of competence in various fields. The decision to exit should be well thought out and on a rational basis. Certainly factors such as job dissatisfaction and deteriorating job conditions are always a valid reason to consider changing jobs! Q. Is six months too short a period within which to change jobs? A. Again this depends on your reasons for leaving. Often candidates feel that their initial image of what the job was going to be like and the actual job itself is very different. This is not always a negative factor, however where the difference is so great that you are being required to perform duties beyond your qualification, or outside your area of speciality, it may be worth considering changing your job. In some cases ‘sticking it out’ may reflect negatively in future employment opportunities as it may show weakness in your decision making skills. Q. Must I disclose my full employment history, including positions that did not work out as expected? A. There are no musts, as the final decision rests with you. However it is advisable to fully disclose all previous positions held as an employer finding out about a non-disclosed position later on may reflect on your trustworthiness as an employee. Whilst the conventional wisdom of too many job changes on the resume not having a positive effect is true to some extent, what is more important is to be able to explain the job changes in a way that would illustrate the genuine need to leave the position as well as reflect positively on your ability to assess your situation and make a decision beneficial to your future. Q. I am getting paid higher at a different firm, should I leave? A. Again, this is a personal decision. With some people financial remuneration is an important aspect of employment. However it is not always wise to base your decision to exit just on the lure of higher financial remuneration. Other factors including additional benefits, working conditions and environment should also be taken into consideration. |
